In the Orioles’ first game action at Camden Yards of the season, Mike Elias sat behind a plate with earbuds in and a radar gun in-hand, giving an interview on live TV.
With Scott Garceau and Mike Bordick on the call on MASN, Elias spoke with the duo about the upcoming season, John Means and numerous other topics while the Orioles and Nationals played an exhibition game on the field.

And the Orioles general manager and executive vice president is bullish about the league’s chances to finish the 2020 season.
“We all feel really good about the fact that we’re here today playing another team at Camden Yards, and I think we’re going to get to the finish line,” Elias said. “I really feel good about the Major League Baseball set-up for the season.”
The season, which shutdown in mid-March, has now featured two Orioles exhibition games before a third against the Nationals on Tuesday night.
“We’re just so happy to be out here, it’s been a lot of work to get to this point,” Elias said. “It was just kind of day-by-day, week-by-week, trying to guide the organization through the period of shutdown, making sure that players were remaining healthy but then also trying to keep them as prepared for a restart as possible. Just working through so many things at an industry wide level. It’s like nothing I’ve ever been a part of.”

So far, the Orioles have had two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the organization: Dwight Smith Jr. and Anthony Santander. Both players have made a full recovery, though Smith is on the Injured List.
While the team has had some injuries to start the season, another issue is the status of pitcher John Means before Opening Day against the Red Sox on Friday.
Means has a sore arm, meaning he could miss his start on Opening Day.
“I don’t know if I’d characterize it as an injury, he’s been throwing continuously through Spring Training,” Elias explained. “He’s been throwing hard and similar to last year in mid-July, he just hit a little bit of a wall. We decided being that it's John Means and being that the season is just getting started, we didn’t want to push him out necessarily so we decided to pump the brakes and see where he’s at here going into Opening Day.”
Elias added the team will make a decision likely on Tuesday, and if Means is unable to start Friday night, he doesn’t think he’ll have to wait very long to pitch this season.
But perhaps the most interesting part of the 2020 season relates to the usage, or lack thereof, of the Orioles’ prospects.
Elias downplayed the option of bringing up catcher and the team’s top prospect, Adley Rutschman, to the big league club unless the team is in a playoff chase. At that point, it’d be all hands on deck.
“If we’re heading towards a possible postseason berth, you look at your best options everywhere and figure out what you’ve got coming and make decisions with that in mind,” Elias said. “There are a lot of players, him included, that we have brought into this player pool primarily for development reasons.”
