Albany, N.Y. — Hospitalizations due to the coronavirus in New York reached another new low since March 17 on Thursday.
A total of 576 people were hospitalized with the virus yesterday, down 10. Hospitalizations peaked at more than 18,000 over multiple days in April.
Of those hospitalized, 140 people were in intensive care units, down two, and 70 people were intubated, also down two. Both those figures are also new lows since mid-March, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
A total of 89 people were newly admitted to hospitals with the virus on Thursday.
Another five people in the state died due to the virus on Thursday, bringing the statewide death toll to 25,150. The number of new deaths in a single day peaked at 800 in mid-April.
“New York state continues to closely monitor alarming Covid-19 numbers throughout the nation as we flatten the curve, slow the spread and proceed with a data-driven, phased reopening,” Cuomo said in a press release. “So much of our ability to fight this destructive virus is dependent on what each of us does in day-to-day life.”
Cuomo urged New Yorkers to wear masks, wash their hands and practice good social distancing. He continued asking local governments to enforce reopening rules.
New York now has 415,014 confirmed cases of the virus, including 644 new cases on Thursday. The state conducted another 68,869 tests for the virus yesterday.
The positive test rate was about 0.9%. Most days in recent weeks, the positive rate has been around 1%.
Central New York’s positive test rate was 0.5% on Thursday, down from 1.1% on Wednesday and 0.8% on Tuesday.
