CLEVELAND, Ohio — Spirit Airlines, which this month launched new nonstop service between Cleveland and Newark Liberty International Airport, is suspending the route due to low demand.
The flight was announced in early June, amid rising hopes within the airline industry that travel would rebound this summer. That hasn’t happened, as coronavirus cases have surged across much of the country, keeping many travelers home.
The last nonstop flight is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 7. Spirit spokesman Field Sutton said he did not know when the route would resume.
Sutton said the airline is committed to bringing back the route when the timing is better. “We’re still looking forward to serving CLE-EWR and we want to make sure the route has a proper chance to succeed,” he said. “In the meantime, our goal is to remain nimble so that we’re able to respond to demand fluctuations quickly, and return to a route like CLE-EWR quickly when the time comes.”
Nationwide, airlines continue to adjust and scale back flights, attempting to match supply with demand.
On Monday, 695,330 travelers passed through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints in the U.S. – down 74% from a year before.
At the time of the announcement, Spirit said the Cleveland to Newark flight was its only route addition for the month of July.
Adding to the decline in demand: New Jersey, New York and Connecticut continue to require visitors from Ohio and 30 other states to quarantine upon arrival for 14 days, making travel to the three states difficult.
Clevelanders can still get to Newark – United Airlines flies to the New Jersey city several times daily from Cleveland Hopkins.
