BOSTON — The state Department of Public Health announced at least 60 new COVID-19 deaths Wednesday, the highest number of confirmed deaths from the virus reported in two weeks.
Wednesday’s jump comes a day after state health officials revealed just 18 coronavirus deaths — the lowest daily figure reported since the virus’ surge in April. During the peak of surge, more than 150 people were dying daily.
With the figures released Wednesday, the state’s death toll reaches 7,568 confirmed cases. Including probable cases of the virus, the death toll statewide is 7,734 as of Wednesday.
The average age of those dying from COVID-19 is 81 years old.
Health officials also confirmed another 266 cases of infection in Massachusetts on Wednesday, bringing the total number to 106,151. The data is based on 8,313 molecular tests and 1,145 antibody tests reported Wednesday.
Wednesday’s totals continue to show a nosedive in key data since mid-April. The rate of infection, as well as the number of hospitals using surge capacity, have both declined by around 90 percent.
Health officials also say hospitalizations since April 15 have decreased by more than 70 percent, based on a three-day average. The average age of those hospitalized is 68 years old.
On June 8, the state entered Phase 2 of a plan to reopen the economy, by allowing restaurants, salons, retail shops and other businesses to resume business with some restrictions.
Gov. Charlie Baker has said there are six indicators that determine the speed the state can move through the four phases of reopening, including the positive test rate, the number of deaths from the virus, the number of those hospitalized with the virus, the health care system’s readiness, testing capacity and contact tracing capabilities.
As of Wednesday, all indicators are considered in a positive trend, or “in progress.”
Below is the total COVID-19 infections by city and town from Jan. 1 through Wednesday and how that total compares to last week’s figures:

• Ayer – 130 (+9)
• Fitchburg – 776 (+1)
• Gardner – 190 (+1)
• Groton – 41 (+1)
• Lancaster – 101 (no change)
• Leominster – 667 (+9)
• Lunenburg – 61 (no change)
• Pepperell – 52 (+2)
• Princeton – 6 (no change)
• Rutland – 52 (no change)
• Shirley – 175 (+1)
• Sterling – 119 (+1)
• Townsend – 32 (+1)
• Westminster – 32 (no change)
The state also released the numbers of patients currently being treated and the number of those in the ICU.
HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital’s Leominster’s campus was treating 18 patients with two in the ICU.
Heywood Hospital in Gardner had five COVID-19 patients admitted with one in the ICU.
Nashoba Valley Medical Center has no patients at this time.
