Perception of morality in the U.S. hit an all-time low, according to Gallup, as religiosity and community decline and debates about abortion and gender transition procedures for children increase.
The new survey shows that 54% believe moral values in the U.S. are poor, with 83% believing they are getting worse. Only 33% believe the state of morality is at least "fair."
REPUBLICAN PRIMARY: BIG TENT OR BIG TOP?
In the 22 years Gallup has been tracking the question, these numbers represent the lowest point. While the number of people who believe morality is poor has increased by 4 percentage points since last year, the number of respondents who say the situation is getting worse increased by 5 percentage points from last year and 16 percentage points from 2021.
The previous record was from 2007, with 82% believing morality in the U.S. was in decline, and 44% said the situation was already poor.
"Are our cultural elites really shocked that Americans believe the state of morality is at the lowest it’s ever been?" Terry Schilling, president of the conservative group American Principles Project, told the Washington Examiner. "The reality is that even with Americans acknowledging our moral decline — they are still wrong. It’s much worse than they even know."
Republicans surveyed also reached a new high in moral perception, with 74% saying the country's moral values are poor. Thirty-eight percent of Democrats had poor ratings, but that group's all-time high was in 2018 when 45% said moral values were poor.
While the share of both Republicans and Democrats believing the moral reality is poor increased 2 percentage points each, independents were the primary driver of the new low with an all-time high of 51%, an increase of 7 points from 2022.
Substantial majorities of all three political groups believe morality is getting worse, with 97% of Republicans, 73% of Democrats, and 80% of independents pessimistic about the future.
While Gallup did not gauge the source for moral decline this year, the organization found last year that the top reason for poor ratings was not a major political topic, but rather the lack of consideration of others. That was the top issue for all three political groups.
A close second for Republicans was the lack of faith and religion as the most important reason for a decline in morality. Religion, which had been a unifying force and moral standard-bearer for many families and communities, has been on the decline in recent decades.
"Healthy communities drive good morality," Schilling said. "As the American family has slowly disintegrated over the last half-century, our communities have followed, which makes sense when you understand that families are the first community we all belong to."
While Gallup surmised the new lows for morality could be rooted in left-leaning policy positions such as "altercations between attendees at public meetings," gun violence, and new attempts to restrict abortion and transgender procedures for children, conservatives take nearly the opposite view.
"On top of teaching kids weird sexual ideologies and instructing them in bizarre sexual activities under the guise of 'safe sex' — we are giving kids sex change procedures," Schilling said.
The fact that there is even a conversation about transgender procedures for children and abortion until the moment of birth is bewildering to conservatives, he said, explaining that a great deal of moral decline is rooted in the sexual revolution and its consequences.
The sexual revolution brought the wide proliferation of pornography, and the internet has exacerbated the issue by turning what some described as "'tasteful nudes' in Playboy" into wildly extreme and violent sexual content online "streaming into the hands of our children's cellphones," Schilling said. "Our politicians betrayed us and sold our children’s hearts and minds to industries that made billions off of them."
Only 10% of people believe U.S. moral values are "good," and 1% say they are "excellent." In addition, 12% say the moral situation is getting better, which is the lowest number since 2008.
With Republicans reaching new highs for poor perception of U.S. morality and a bleak outlook into the future, there has been movement in the direction of their policy goals.

A growing number of states, which currently stands at 20, have passed laws to protect children from gender transition procedures, while six states have passed age verification laws for online pornography, and more than half of the states have pursued abortion restrictions since the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
"The good news is that Americans are finally waking up and beginning to push back," Schilling said. "The moral sexual revolution is here — the only question is if it came too late."
