Parts of Lake Tahoe experienced record-breaking low temperatures at the same time California state water officials announced one of the largest snowpacks ever measured in the region – 722 inches as of April 3.
Last week, record-breaking low temperatures were observed for three days in a row in South Lake Tahoe, plummeting to bone-chilling lows of nine, seven, and eight degrees on April 3, April 4, and April 5, respectively. The previous April 3 record was set in 1999 at 11 degrees, while the previous April 4 record was set that same year at 13 degrees, and the April 5 record was set in 2003 at 15 degrees, said Justin Collins, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Reno office.
“It’s very unusual and it’s definitely out of the ordinary to see low temperatures like that, especially getting into April,” Collins said.
The bone-chilling weather is linked to the region’s historic, back-to-back winter storms, which have been carrying cold air in from the north while the accumulating snowpack keeps temperatures down.
“There’s been no time, no chance to heat up, really,” Collins said.
However, there was a sudden shift in the forecast as an area of high pressure brought warmer air into the region Sunday. South Lake Tahoe recorded a high of 59, and Collins said warm and sunny weather should return again next week. In the meantime, there are chances for some weak, wind-driven rain showers Monday night into Tuesday and again on Wednesday.
“We’re hoping it’s a gradual warmup, kind of how it is now, so all of the snow doesn’t melt at once,” Collins said. “Flooding hazards are something we’re continuing to monitor especially in the next few months.”
A flood advisory is in effect for the Carson River through Monday as water levels slowly rise, but “it’s not really anywhere close to action stage” and will be extended as necessary, Collins said.
Temperatures will peak at 60 degrees in South Lake Tahoe on Monday and steadily decrease until Thursday, when the weather service expects to see a high of 50 and a low in the 20s.
“And then they’ll shoot right back up by Sunday, maybe going back up to around 60,” Collins said.
The weather service also anticipates breezy conditions with southwesterly wind gusts of up to 35 mph early in the week. Collins advised the public to keep an eye out on wave heights, but said no travel impacts are expected this week.
