SANTA FE — A rally in favor of legislation aimed at helping low-wage workers and families drew about 300 people to the Roundhouse on Monday as they sought support for tax rebates, early childhood education and other measures.

With songs and signs, the group urged lawmakers to provide training and other aid to oil, gas and coal workers as New Mexico pursues a transition to renewable energy sources.

They chanted “Si, Se Puede” — yes, we can — and carried signs highlighting the role of immigrants in the economy. Speakers delivered short speeches in English and Spanish.

It was among the biggest rallies of the session so far.

One focus of support was a proposal to establish a $10 million economic transition fund that could pay for training, child care subsidies and financial assistance to energy workers, regardless of immigration status.

The legislation, House Bill 188, is jointly sponsored by five Democratic members of the House.

“We are working hard and doing all we can on the floor — talking to our allies, talking to those who may not be allies yet — to get this bill passed,” state Rep. Linda Serrato, D-Santa Fe, told the crowd.

Rally-goers spoke in favor of a deep slate of bills and ideas, including:

— Senate Bill 10, offering one-time tax rebates for low-income families and workers.

— Extending child care subsidies for low- and middle-income families.

— House Bill 215, studying the feasibility of expanding unemployment benefits to people who aren’t eligible now because of immigration status or other factors.
