Wind chills across Massachusetts dropped already frigid temperatures to piercingly cold levels Friday morning, making some areas of the state feel as low as 17 degrees below zero.
In the commonwealth’s population centers, the wind chill hovered around zero degrees or lower, National Weather Service data showed. Springfield felt like 2 degrees as of 5 a.m. Friday, Boston felt like 4 degrees below zero and Worcester felt like 5 below.
The wind chill of 17 degrees below zero was reported by the National Weather Service just west of Springfield and Westfield, along the Massachusetts Turnpike. North of Pittsfield, the air felt like 15 degrees below zero; north of Greenfield, it felt like 13 below.
Even close to the Atlantic Coast, an area typically of milder temperatures, the air felt as cold as it did in some parts of the western half of the state. In Plymouth, the temperature was 15 degrees around 6:30 a.m. In reality, it felt closer to 1 degree.
In Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties, the National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Advisory until 9 a.m. Friday. The agency warned that the cold could cause hypothermia if people did not dress warm enough.
Temperatures were expected to rise later in the day, but remain bitter. The high temperatures projected for the day in Boston, Worcester and Springfield were all between 19 and 22 degrees.
