Rivalry: 30-12-1, Syracuse
Current Streak: 2, Rutgers
First Meeting: The only tie between Syracuse and Rutgers came in 1914, the first meeting between the programs. Rutgers, who were known as the Queensmen at the time, traveled to Archbold Stadium and drew 14-14. Interestingly enough, Syracuse also tied in their next game that season against Colgate by a score of 0-0. Imagine that football game in 1914.
Last Meeting: Rutgers were ranked No. 20 and were a perfect 5-0 heading into a game against Syracuse in Piscataway on October 13, 2012. The Scarlet Knights picked off Ryan Nassib twice, forced two fumbles, and blocked a field goal to grind out a 23-15 win over the Orange. Syracuse had 414 total yards to Rutgers’ 237 total yards in the loss.
Head Coaches: Syracuse - Dino Babers (sixth year, 25-36) | Rutgers - Greg Schiano (13th year, 72-73)
Coach Bio: Schiano, a Wyckoff, New Jersey native, attended Bucknell University, where he featured as a linebacker. His first taste of coaching was with Rutgers as a graduate assistant. After a year, he went to Penn State as a graduate assistant and eventually a defensive back coach. After a stint with the Bears, Schiano became the defensive coordinator for Miami, where he coached future NFL Pro Bowlers Jonathan Vilma and Ed Reed.
Schiano’s success with Miami earned him a trip back to Rutgers for his first head coaching job back in 2001. After four losing seasons, Schiano led the Scarlet Knights to five straight bowls from 2005 to 2009. That included an 11-2 season and a No. 12 ranking in 2006. After another losing season in 2010, Schiano brought Rutgers back to a bowl in 2011, winning the Pinstripe Bowl. Rutgers won five out of six bowl games with Schiano at the helm.
Schiano then got a chance at the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as its head coach in 2012. He started 7-9 in his first season, but fell quickly to 4-12 in his second season. That would be it for Schiano in Tampa Bay as he would be fired after his second season. Schiano wouldn’t coach again until he joined Urban Meyer at Ohio State in 2016 as the team’s defensive coordinator. He stayed until 2018.
Schiano returned to Rutgers in 2020, signing an eight-year deal to lead the team for a second time.
Last Year: Schiano’s return to Rutgers didn’t exactly go to plan as, playing an all-Big Ten Conference schedule, the team went 3-6. All three of Rutgers’ wins came away from home.
Last Game: Five turnovers caused by the Rutgers defense contributed to a 61-14 win over Temple. The rushing attack was strong for the Scarlet Knights as they rushed for 220 yards. Four players carried the ball over eight times.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: The passing numbers from Noah Vedral were not great against Temple, going 15-of-27 in the air for 138 yards and one touchdown. The rushing numbers were decent, however, as he carried the ball nine times for 71 yards.
If Syracuse Wins: Taylor Ham sandwiches for everyone on me! (Only applicable to those with valid NunesBucks)
If Syracuse Loses: We worry that Wegmans is close to getting replaced by Whole Foods (or — gasp — Food Lion).
Fun Fact: Greg Schiano is 6-5 against Syracuse as Rutgers’ head coach. Not so fun, but something to aim for if you’re the Orange.
