When the calendar flips to May, collegiate track & field athletes start to round into postseason form. If this weekend was any inclination of what we can expect in just a few weeks, then we’re going to be in for a treat.

Another All-Time Mark For Davis
It shouldn’t surprise us any longer.
When Tara Davis jumps, expect all-time marks.
Davis, the Texas standout who unified the collegiate indoor and outdoor long jump records in the month (March), soared a wind-legal 6.97m (22-10½) on Friday at the Texas Invitational to match her second-best effort of the season – which also happened to be the third-best mark in collegiate history. If you’re counting at home, which we certainly are, Davis now has three of the top-5 marks in collegiate outdoor history in 2021 – No. 1, t-No. 3, t-No. 3.
Talk About A Happy Birthday
Jasmine Moore put herself in some legendary company.
Moore bounded a wind-legal 14.27m (46-10) in the triple jump this afternoon at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial to equal the eighth-best performance in collegiate history. It just so happens that Moore, a Georgia standout, tied a mark of another Bulldog star – none other than 2018 The Bowerman winner Keturah Orji, who happens to own five other all-time top-10 marks in collegiate outdoor history.
That’s not a bad way to spend a birthday, if you ask us.
Oh. That’s right … It was Moore’s birthday on Saturday.
No Lights? No Problem?
Rolling blackouts delayed the West Coast Relays in Clovis, California.
That didn’t stop several collegians entered from lighting up the track.
Courtney Wayment of BYU moved up to No. 5 on the all-time collegiate chart in the steeplechase with her 9:31.37 winner on Friday night. That was the best mark by a collegian since 2016, when a fellow Courtney (Courtney Frerichs of New Mexico) rewrote the collegiate record book.
Elly Henes of NC State won going away in the 5000, clocking a time of 15:18.75. That might have been less than one second off the seasonal best established by Mercy Chelangat of Alabama just one week ago at 15:17.79, but Henes is now the 10th-best performer in collegiate history after her strong race (Chelangat sits one spot above her at No. 9).
Sub-3:40.00 or Bust
There are currently 30 men on the All-College Descending Order List who have dipped under 3:40.00 in the 1500 this season. Nine of those came from the fast section at the West Coast Relays last night, including four of the top-10 fastest marks on the chart.
To compare, the year-end Descending Order List in 2019 had 15.
If you go back to 2018, that number decreased to 12.
Rewind four years and only three men hit that mark in 2017.
