FULL-TIME: Raúl Ruidíaz scored a brace and Brad Smith had one his best-ever performances to send the Seattle Sounders to the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings with a 3-0 win over the previously perfect LA Galaxy on Sunday.
What once was one of the marquee matchups has turned into a rather drab affair over the last few years as the LA Galaxy have been mostly bad while the Seattle Sounders have supplanted them as the cream of the Western Conference crop. This meeting, however, promises to be a better and should a winner emerge, they’ll find themselves leading the Supporters’ Shield race.
Sure, it’s still just three weeks in, but this one does have some genuine intrigue. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is leading the Golden Boot race with five goals in his first two games, Ethan Zubak is emerging as a promising strike partner and Greg Vanney has the Galaxy as one of the league’s only 2-0-0 teams (the other is RSL).
The Sounders, meanwhile, seem to be navigating their early season reasonably well so far despite missing Nicolas Lodeiro, who is expected to make his return in some form this week. Should be a good one.
- Chicharito is one goal away from tying Ante Razov’s record for most goals through the first three games of the season (6). He’s already tied the record for the most goals through two games (5).
- Southern California native Cristian Roldan has scored six times against the Galaxy in his career, more than against any other MLS team. The only other team Roldan has scored more than twice against is Portland (4).
- After their slow start against the Galaxy, the Sounders have only lost two of their last 15 meetings with the Galaxy and are now 15-12-11 against Galaxy in all competitions. Their last two meetings in Seattle ended in Sounders wins, 4-3 (2019) and 5-0 (2018) and you have to go back to 2016 (1-0) to find the last time the Galaxy won here.
