Farmers
North Stanly High School Future Farmers of America boys had won $250 in cash and scholarships, plus plaques, in the combined district and state FFA land judging contests at Northeast Guilford High School.
The Stanly chapter won first place in the district, second in the state and one of its members was the highest scoring individual in the state competition.
They were in competition with teams from 13 federations.
The team won $50 for the first place district win and $100 for the second place state position.
Ronnie Burleson won a $100 scholarship to the school of his choice and a plaque for racking up the highest points for an individual in the state contest. He scored 210 out of 240.
Other members included Butch Brooks, Harold Blalock and John Ott.
Pool
Construction would begin on a swimming pool in the Central North Carolina Council’s new Boy Scout reservation being developed off N.C. Highway 740 between New London and Badin.
The pool, a Junior Olympic, would be 35 feet by 82 feet in size, with a diving area of 35 feet by 35 feet and 10 feet deep. It was expected to be open by the reservation’s opening on June 19.
DMV
Phillip O. Redwine, 27, of Badin, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Redwine, had accepted the position of director of the Drivers License Division of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
Scholarship
Sylvia Ann Wall, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G. Ritchie Wall, had received a scholarship to travel to West Germany to study at the Goettingen University for a year.
Service
Communications Technician Third Class Tony R. Tucker, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard R. Tucker of Albemarle, was in Norfolk, Virginia, aboard the technical research ship USS Georgetown after completing a three-month research cruise to the Caribbean Sea and Equatorial Pacific Ocean earlier in the month.
