Megan Romansky makes the most of her time at Voorheesville - Times Union

Megan Romansky is a senior defender for the Voorheesville girls' soccer team.

Named to the Times Union Small School first team as a junior in 2019, Romansky is playing in her fifth varsity season for the Blackbirds. She also competed for the girls' basketball team as a junior and senior, played tennis during the fall and will compete in her third varsity year with the softball team.

Romansky, who plans to major in International Business in college, has yet to select a school. Up next for Voorheesville (5-1-1) is a night game Monday at Mechanicville.

Q: How would you says things have gone so far this season?

A: I would say pretty good. I am grateful that we have been able to play with all of our fans in a somewhat normal season. Overall, I would say it has been pretty good.

Q: A bit of a difficult week with the loss at Schalmont and then the 2-2 game with Mohonasen. How big was it to gain the tie with Mohonasen?

A: It was pretty big. I know we were disappointed that we were ahead, but we were glad to keep it at that score considering (the 2019 game against Mohanasen).

Q: When you started playing soccer, were you always a defender?

A: I used to play midfield, but once I started playing varsity, I moved to the defensive side. I started with defensive midfield, and now I am all the way in the back. I have even played goalie a couple of times.

Q: Some athletes are switched to a position for the betterment of the team, yet they sometimes don't seem to enjoy or gravitate to the change. You look like you really love playing defense. Talk about that.

A: I have always enjoyed being on the field, obviously, no matter where I am. I like having the ball at my feet and distributing it to my teammates. Wherever (coach Tim Kelley) wants me, that is where I go. Defense came natural to me, so that is where I went.

Q: You look like you enjoy taking the free kicks. I guess it is a chance to show off your strong leg, right?

A: Yep.

Q: With the adjustments that have been made in multiple sports working through the coronavirus pandemic, it has shifted soccer season to March and April and taken away sectionals and the state tournament. The Colonial Council is conducting a league tournament, so has the team readjusted its goals toward that event?

A: Yes, it is sort of like sectionals. We are playing some of the same teams we would be playing against in sectionals, so the goal is to keep playing as long as we can and compete for the title.

Q: Has juggling academics and all of your athletic pursuits in a short period of time made time management even more critical for you during your senior year?

A: Absolutely. I feel like with this (scholastic) year, it is even more stressful with the college decision. I also played tennis during the fall, so that was four sports on the table. I feel like I have gotten a lot of help from my teachers and family, especially, to keep my on track.

Q: When you actually have time away from academics and athletics, what do you like to do?

A: I go hiking a lot. I like playing video games and chilling out at my house.

Q: When you saw the fall soccer season get postponed and knowing what you already experienced having your spring season cancelled as a junior, how concerned where you there would be no senior season playing soccer?

A: That was one of my biggest fears, that we would not be able to play. I am so grateful we have been to get so far with all of the sports we have played.

Q: Colleges have granted student-athletes an extra year in many sports dealing with COVID. Recruiting times have not been as plentiful without as many live periods. Has that made your recruiting process more stressful to navigate?

A: Definitely.

Q: What is it like to be a part of Voorheesville girls' soccer, because it appears to me you all really enjoy each other's company playing together?

A: We definitely do have fun out there. We have always been pretty group-oriented. This year, a lot of the younger girls have been playing together for a long time. It is always good to see us work together for the success of the team.

Q: Being a captain, is that a role you take special pride in?

A: Yes, always. On a team like this where every player is very skilled and talented, to be able to help control and have a higher say is pretty cool to me.
