Long-time Palliser SVP Ben Horch retires - Furniture Today

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Palliser Furniture Senior Vice President of Key Account Sales Ben Horch is retiring after a 50-year career with the Canadian upholstery manufacturer.

With his retirement, Horch’s accounts will transition under the leadership of KC Greenwald, vice president of U.S. and 1nternational sales.

Horch joined Palliser, at the time known as A.A. DeFehr Mfg., in 1971, where his early experience in manufacturing and product development gave him a foundation for his subsequent concentration on sales. After undergraduate studies in industrial engineering, he worked in costing and production time studies in the company’s case goods factory. His interest in design led him into a product role with the introduction of the Logic product line in 1976.

“I had the privilege of working closely with Ben for many of the 40 years he was in sales,” said Palliser Chief Revenue Officer Roger Friesen. “Ben’s successful sales career, many achievements and friendships will always be a part of Palliser’s legacy.”

Horch’s sales roles focused primarily on the U.S. market from the re-entry of Palliser into that market in 1981, progressing to senior vice president of sales, leading the sales organization and working closely with key accounts. For more than 40 years he fostered many relationships with retailers and was instrumental in building a customer base which, to this day, makes up Palliser’s core business.

“It has been fantastic to have been a part of this great industry for so many years,” Horch said. “I will miss the many great people I worked with and the many retailer relationships that were developed.”

“We are grateful to Ben for having represented the company with the utmost integrity throughout his entire career and wish him and his family the very best for his retirement,” said Palliser President and CEO Peter Tielmann. “Ben is a close friend and will always remain a member of our Palliser family.”

I returned to the publication in January 2015 after nine years of writing about furniture retail strategies and best practices at a monthly magazine focusing on home furnishings retail operations. Prior to that, I spent 10 years with F/T covering wood furniture, the last five of those as case goods editor. Upon my return to F/T, I developed coverage of the logistical and service aspects of the furniture industry as well as following the occasional, home office and home entertainment categories. In April 2018 I took over the upholstery category, with responsibility for coverage of the fabric and leather stationary and motion upholstery, recliners and massage chair categories.
