Hopping Back in Time for a Look at Previous Easter Weather - Spectrum News

The Easter Bunny has had to endure anything from snow to 70-degree weather and above in the past.

What You Need To Know

  • Easter Sunday can fall between March 22 and April 25 each year

  • Later Easters are typically warmer

  • Since 1980, Rochester has seen measurable snow seven times on Easter

While this Easter will be quiet and mild, that hasn’t always been the case for Rochester and the Finger Lakes.

Looking back at Easter’s climatology can be a little tricky, though. That’s because Easter falls on a different date each year.

Easter Sunday can happen between March 22 and April 25. Early in the calendar, Rochester’s average high and low for Easter was 45 and 28 degrees, respectively.

When Easter happens later in the year, temperatures are typically warmer. By then, the average high is 60 degrees with a low of 40 degrees on the dot.

There have been a few Easters that have felt a little more like summer in Rochester.

Since 1980, there have been six times where Rochester hit a high of at least 70 degrees.

The hottest Easter was back on April 14, 1968, when Rochester topped out at 85 degrees. That’s not too much hotter from Easter just a few years ago when Rochester hit 80 degrees in 2017.

On the flip side, Rochester didn’t break out of the 30s four times in the last 40 years.

That’s for high temperatures, but the coldest low temperature on Easter was five degrees back on March 30, 1975.

With temperatures near and below freezing some Easters, that means snow has been in the mix some years too. The snowiest one was just about 26 years ago when Rochester picked up 2.9 inches of fresh snow.

Since 1980, Rochester has seen measurable snow seven times on Easter. It’s been a couple of years since that last happened, though.

A trace of snow fell in Rochester back in 2018. The last time Rochester picked up more than just a fresh coating for Easter was over 10 years ago with 0.7 inches in 2007.

The last two Easters have featured trace amounts of rain, but the rainiest Easter was April 3, 1988, when 1.02 inches of rain fell.

Rain isn’t in the forecast for Easter this year though, so enjoy the dry and comfortably mild weather with highs in the 50s to right around 60 degrees!
