Sounders at Rapids, recap: Feeling low in the Mile High City - Sounder At Heart

singkrata.blogspot.com

The Seattle Sounders lost 3-1 to the Colorado Rapids on Sunday night, leaving them in second place in the Western Conference on both points and points per game. The first half was open and back-and-forth, with the Sounders attack creating most of the danger. As is so often the case, though, little mistakes in the places you most expect to be safe led to the bulk of the damage for Seattle as Colorado went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Sounders had their moments in the second half, but really didn’t look much like a team that could find a win as heavy legs grew heavier at altitude. Colorado took a more defensive posture after the break, but continued to press the Sounders, and the Sounders struggled to deal with that pressure. The Rapids managed to double their lead with their second goal from a set piece in the 75th minute, and Seattle just never really threatened to make a game of it after that.

Seattle is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Southern California to face the LA Galaxy at 8:00 PM.

11’ — Shinyashiki gets on the end of a cross as the ball goes over the head of Shane O’Neill, and his header beats Frei at the far post to take the early lead. 1-0

22’ — Not long after seemingly having earned a penalty, Morris gets on the end of a cross from Cristian Roldan inside the area and knocks the ball home to level things up. 1-1

42’ — Rosenberry cleans up a clearance off of a corner as he whacks the ball low and inside the far post from outside of the box to regain the lead minutes before half-time. 2-1

45+2’ — In the final moments of the half Ruidíaz nearly evens the score as he redirects a cross, but Yarbrough denies him at the near post.

59’ — Frei is able to get his entire body between the goal and a rocket from Namli, putting it out for a corner and keeping the gap to one goal.

75’ — Bassett runs through the box unmarked on a free kick and puts his header in the goal as things go from bad to worse. 3-1

“Squad rotation and other concerns:” The Sounders came into this game with one change to the Starting XI — Shane O’Neill for Xavier Arreaga — and a short bench with only six subs available. The reasoning provided was “squad rotation and other concerns.” With players already looking tired from the jump in several games running, the lack of changes and subs in a game played at elevation seems likely to have been a mistake as the team regularly looked sluggish and slow in support and in their ball movement. Schmetzer explained that Miguel Ibarra (family emergency) and Román Torres (illness) were last-minute cancellations, but that still left an unused spot on the Sounders bench.

Centerback issues: Plenty of people are skeptical of Xavier Arreaga as locked-in starter, and not without cause. Arreaga has seemingly got one boneheaded mistake in him each game, and that’s caused serious problems. Shane O’Neill, who started in his place, has been decent for a guy who should be the fourth option, but against the Rapids he showed why he shouldn’t be a consistent starter for the Sounders. His mistakes contributed to at least the first two goals and he was lucky not to have a couple others punished.

Jorstian Mordan: Even in a game that is better wrapped up in old newspaper, soaked in lighter fluid, and burned along with all of your ex-boyfriend’s stuff that he left behind when he moved out, there’s still some good. In this game, that good came in the form of a classic Jorstian Mordan goal. The two best friends combined for what proved to be the lone Sounders goal about midway through the first half when Cristian Roldan found Jordan Morris inside the box, earning Morris his ninth goal and Roldan his fourth assist of the season.

Cherish the good moments, even during times of crisis.

10 — The Sounders gave up 10 shots from inside the box against Colorado, one more than the nine shots total that Seattle managed. That’s easily the most the Sounders have given up this year.
