It’s time to be grateful for what we learned this year - San Bernardino County Sun

Now that 2020 is winding down, I hear the phrase “good riddance” more frequently.

Thanks for the memories

I know people who, during the recent time change, didn’t want an extra hour of 2020.

Hopefully, 2021 will be kinder.

It would be nice if memories of the pandemic, the ailing economy, lockdowns, and divisive politics could just disappear miraculously.

This past year, many of us lived closer to our families than ever before and learned heartfelt lessons about those who give our lives meaning. Dining room tables became desks, garages were gyms and backyards made perfect playgrounds.

The closeness, it turns out, was a blessing given to us by our loving family members.

Most of us give thanks for the most important people in our lives – our families.

But I remember learning about some special reasons to be grateful years ago when I wrote a column called  “Kids’ Soapbox,” interviewing young students in San Bernardino elementary schools. The young kids were so full of fun information. I remember them giving thanks for sunshine, puppies, cookies and sand. I also vaguely remember one young man who was grateful for watermelon without seeds.

Be thankful for the family and friends with you to give thanks this year – our spouses, the loves of our lives; our precious children, and the happiness they bring us; and those siblings who bring laughter and soul-searching to each family.

In our family, there is a special place for those we have lost – our mother, father, a brother, daughter and son. They are in our hearts and will always be a part of who we are.

Over the years, we’ve found what cooking assignments made for an easier time for the chefs. The host home always did the turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, guests would come through with the other sides and desserts.

In our family, my sister, Melanie has made the stuffing because she got the recipe from her husband, Ned’s, mother, Pat. It’s wonderful.

And we can’t forget the cranberry sauce – canned for the wimps and homemade for those intrepid souls who like pucker power.

About 20 years ago we had a group of 15-20 hungry folks.

Since then, we’ve shrunk, and this year will be different.

About a month ahead of time I collect colorful autumn leaves and press them for the tables. It’s very festive. Sometimes, there’s drama. One year, an aunt and uncle had to leave the table and rush to the hospital to have their baby.

But no matter how many we are it’s always about love.

And cranberry sauce.
