For first time since summer, Florida reports more than 10k new coronavirus cases in single day - Tampa Bay Times

With the nation’s total coronavirus caseload now topping 11 million infections, Florida’s Department of Health reported 10,105 new coronavirus infections — the highest single-day total seen since July 25.

State health officials also attributed 30 more deaths to the virus on Sunday, bringing Florida’s overall death toll throughout the pandemic to 17,734 lives lost. Since March 1, the day Florida’s first coronavirus infection became public, 885,201 people within the state have become infected.

Florida’s overall coronavirus caseload is the third-highest in the nation, behind Texas' more than 1.05 million infections and California’s 1.02 million. With a population of about 21.5 million people, that means roughly one in 24 Floridians have become infected by the virus.

Nationwide, more than one in 400 Americans have tested positive for the virus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center. The national caseload surpassed 11 million infections on Sunday after surpassing 10 million just last week. With all states now tallied, Johns Hopkins is reporting Saturday’s nationwide caseload was 156,416 infections.

More than 60,000 Americans are currently hospitalized with the virus and at least 245,933 people have died. Worldwide, more than 54.2 million have been infected with COVID-19, and more than 1.3 million have died.

Hospitalizations:

By Sunday morning, 3,118 people across Florida were in the hospital with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration — an increase of 88 hospitalizations in 24 hours.

Roughly 22 percent of those were in Tampa Bay area hospitals, which reported 680 coronavirus patients. Local hospitalizations rose by about a quarter in the past month, records show. Florida’s hospitals have treated 52,529 coronavirus patients since the start of the pandemic.

About 26 percent of both regular hospital beds available statewide and adult beds in Florida’s intensive care units were available for new patients Monday. About 42.5 percent of all pediatric ICU beds were empty by 3 p.m. on Sunday, with 372 current patients.

In the Tampa Bay area, about 25 percent of hospital beds and 21 percent of adult ICU beds were available Sunday. The region’s pediatric units have continued to operate at about 26 percent availability for the past three weeks, with 64 active patients Sunday afternoon.

The number of people hospitalized has continued to increase in recent weeks, up from 2,732 last Sunday and 2,337 the week before. The counties experiencing the most coronavirus hospitalizations has mostly aligned with the number of known infections reported to the state. Miami-Dade lead the state with 437 active coronavirus patients on Sunday, followed by Broward and Palm Beach counties. Hillsborough County’s hospitalizations on Sunday was the fourth-highest number in the state at 219 active patients, followed by Duval, Orange and Pinellas County’s 155 patients.

Positivity:

Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 8.3 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University, which recently changed its metric to align more closely with the Florida Department of Health’s measure.

For much of the fall, Florida’s positivity rate has steadily declined from a high of 20 percent during a case surge in mid-July. Still, Florida is one of 43 states above the World Health Organization’s recommended positivity rate of 5 percent or below. A high positivity rate can indicate there’s not enough testing in a given area to capture mild and asymptomatic cases.

According to state data, Florida’s positivity rate for new cases was 7.6 percent, and has ranged from 6.3 percent to 9.9 percent in the last two weeks.

Statewide, more than 6.8 million people have been tested for the coronavirus — about one-third of Florida’s entire population. On Sunday, state health officials reported the results from more than 121,155 coronavirus tests.

Florida’s death rate is the 12th highest in the nation per capita, according to the university. By Sunday, the state was averaging 56.1 new deaths each day, records show.

Local Numbers:

Tampa Bay added 1,373 coronavirus cases on Sunday and four deaths — one each in Citrus, Hernando, Manatee and Pinellas counties.

Citrus leads the area with an average weekly positivity rate of about 11 percent, followed by Polk at 9 percent, Pasco and Hillsborough at 8 percent and Hernando, Manatee and Pinellas at 7 percent.

As of the latest counts, Hillsborough has 52,907 cases and 862 deaths; Pinellas has 29,106 cases and 858 deaths; Polk has 25,252 cases and 650 deaths; Manatee has 14,772 cases and 349 deaths; Pasco has 12,547 cases and 260 deaths; Hernando has 4,255 cases and 188 deaths; and Citrus has 3,927 cases and 148 deaths.
