DAVISON, MI – Davison abandoning its potent passing game Friday night had nothing to do with the bitterly cold weather.
It had everything to do with history.
When the Cardinals played Grand Blanc during the second week of the high school football season, they rushed for almost 500 yards while winning by 25 points. So if it worked once, why not try it again?
That’s exactly what Davison did in a 48-19 victory in the Division 1 district finals at Cardinal Stadium, where the temperatures were in the low 30s by the time the game ended.
The Cardinals (9-0) rushed for 416 of their 482 total yards and scored all six of their touchdowns on the ground to earn a regional matchup next week against the winner of Saturday’s game between Detroit Catholic Central and White Lake Lakeland.
“We wanted to keep the ball out of their offense’s hands and the best way to do that is keep the ball on the ground, chew up the clock and wear them out,” said Davison coach Jake Weingartz. "You could see in the second half they were pretty tired and we took advantage.
“When we played them the first time, they couldn’t put any more guys in the box ... and obviously our kids are pretty physical. After a while, things would just start to break open.”
Carter Cryderman did the majority of the damage for Davison when the Cards beat Grand Blanc 46-21 back in September, rushing for 205 yards and five touchdowns. He had another big game Friday with 164 yards and one TD on 24 carries.
But the rematch belonged to Davison’s Te’Avion Warren.
He rushed 12 times for 189 yards – that’s an average of 15.8 yards per carry – while running for one TD. He also had four tackles on defense and returned an interception for another TD.
“Te’Avion took over,” Weingartz said. "He took over on offense, he took over on defense, he was making tackles. Obviously, he had the pick six. He made a couple of huge runs that really broke it open early in the second half.
“He’s a stud. Our guys don’t have a ton of numbers. This was the second time all year that our starters got to have some meaningful minutes in the second half.”
Warren put the Cardinals in front 27-6 midway through the third quarter, when he somehow escaped a brigade of Bobcat tacklers at the line of scrimmage and went 66 yards up the left sideline for a touchdown.
He sealed the victory – and started the running clock – with a 22-yard interception return for another TD with 2:22 left in the third.
“I can’t thank anybody but the O-Line and the rest of the team,” Warren said. “We didn’t even plan for it. We just got in the game and saw they couldn’t stop the run and we just pounded it on them. It felt great. I’m just happy to beat them and go to the next round of the playoffs.”
Did we mention Warren played for Grand Blanc last season?
So if anybody can pinpoint the difference between the teams, it’s obviously him.
“It’s just toughness,” he said. “I feel like we’re tougher than them.”
Quarterback Brendan Sullivan threw for more than 3,000 yards last year in leading Davison to the Division 1 state title but he did most of his damage on the ground against Grand Blanc, rushing 11 times for 43 yards and three TDs.
Sullivan completed 5 of 7 passes for 57 yards with one interception.
“Last game, we rushed for over 400 yards,” Sullivan said. "That was the game plan coming into it. They can’t stop the run. They’re not physical like we are. All credit to the O-line. Those guys are some dawgs. They worked hard all week. It was fun to watch.
“Obviously beating Grand Blanc is fun but that’s not the goal. The goal is Ford Field. We’re going to get back there.”
Jay’len Flowers also had a rushing touchdown for the Cardinals, Gabe Hopkins kicked six extra points and Will Watkins was outstanding on the defensive side of the ball. He had six tackles, two sacks and batted down two passes.
Grand Blanc (7-2) scored the game’s first touchdown and only trailed 13-6 at halftime.
The Bobcats jumped in front with 3:34 left in the opening quarter on a 3-yard run by Dennis Underwood.
Grand Blanc was seeking its first regional berth since 2011, when the Bobcats posted a 9-3 record.
