Hurricane Sally is continuing its slow and plodding trek towards the Alabama/Mississippi coasts.

As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, the hurricane was about 85 miles south of the east end of Dauphin Island, crawling northwest at 2 mph. According to Jim Stefkovich, meteorologist, Alabama Emergency Management Agency, wind between 4-5 a.m. included 40 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 48 mph at Dauphin Island, 32 mph with gusts to 47 mph at Mobile Airport and 22 mph with gusts to 37 mph at Gulf Shores.  A heavy band of rain with embedded supercell storms is moving inland this morning.

Sally has maximum winds of 85 mph that extend 45 miles from the center with tropical-storm force winds up to 125 miles from the center. Landfall is currently projected near Mobile Wednesday morning or early afternoon with a range anywhere from Gulfport, Mississippi to Pensacola, Florida.

The storm is expected to lose intensity after landfall Wednesday but leave behind flooding from the slow-moving storms heavy rains.

When will the storm arrive?

Tropical storm-force winds will arrive around 2 p.m. Tuesday along the Mobile and Baldwin county coasts. The winds will move into southwest corner of Alabama by 2 a.m. Wednesday before heading northeast throughout the day and into the early evening.

Rain will be spreading northward today and all day Wednesday. On Wednesday, the threat of tornadoes will generally be east and south of a Mobile – Montgomery – Auburn line.   There is low potential for a couple of tornadoes east of an Alexander City – Andalusia line on Thursday.

The widespread, heavy rain will be ending on Thursday, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms on Friday.
