What does Mitch Trubisky's future in Chicago look like now? - NBCSports.com

In case you were blinded the sun's brief appearance in Chicago this weekend, it was reported that the Bears are declining Mitch Trubisky's fifth-year option

Regardless of where you stand on how expected – or prudent – the decision was or was not, avoiding the final year of the quarterback's rookie contract is the latest in a line of offseason moves that Ryan Pace has used to signal the end of the Trubisky era in Chicago. Gone are the on-record reassurances from Pace; Chase Daniel's on the Lions now, too. It'd be wrong to say that Trubisky's future with the team is uncertain, especially when the Bears made their point loud and clear this weekend.

So what does the immediate future hold for Trubisky and the Bears? What does 2020 look like for the former future of the franchise? Laurence Holmes is joined by NBC Sports Chicago's Bears Insider, J.J. Stankevitz, producer Eric Strobel and writer Cam Ellis on the latest "Under Center Podcast" to discuss just that. The NFL still plans on playing a full 16-game season, but on Monday morning they announced a slight change of plans: all games will take place on U.S. soil.

Five international games were scheduled to take place during the 2020 season – one at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and four in London (two at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and two at Wembley). Those games will now be played as normal home games for the Dolphins, Falcons, Jaguars, and Cardinals.

The announcement represents the first significant change made to the NFL's schedule since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The league is still planning on playing a full season, but the schedule release was delayed over a month and NFL officials are reportedly already discussing contingency plans in the case that the season can't start on time. Teams are currently in the middle of a virtual-practice window implemented when it was announced that rookie minicamps and OTAs would not be taking place.

On Monday morning the Dolphins announced that Don Shula, 90, had died at his home.

Shula was an iconic NFL figure who became the winningest head coach in league history – surpassing George Halas – in 1993. In 33 years with the Colts and Dolphins, Shula won two Super Bowls, 16 division titles, and 347 games. He played defensive back for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts, and Washington Redskins for six years before going into coaching.

Shula was also the coach of the 1972 Dolphins, the only team in NFL history to finish a season unbeaten (17-0).

“Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years,” the Dolphins said in a statement. “He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and City of Miami in the national sports scene. Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Anne along with his children Dave, Donna, Sharon, Ann, and Mike.”

From a local angle, Shula's Dolphins were the only team that beat the 1985 Bears squad that would go on to win a title, and his son Mike was the Bears' tight ends coach from 1993-1995.
