What time is tonight’s near-total lunar eclipse? - oregonlive.com

A big lunar eclipse is coming Thursday night into Friday morning, turning the moon a deep shade of red as the earth’s shadow falls across it.

The best time to view it is during its partial eclipse phase, between 11:19 p.m. Pacific time Thursday and 2:47 a.m. Friday, with the maximum eclipse taking place just after 1 a.m. – if you’re in a place where you can see it, that is. Livestreams will be available for those unable to see it locally, including one hosted by Time and Date.

Rain and clouds are forecast so Oregonians will have difficulty finding a clear view. The weather also will likely obscure the tail end of the Leonid meteor shower that is coinciding with the eclipse.

The eclipse will last 3 hours, 28 minutes and 23 seconds, making it the longest in centuries, Space.com reported.

But Oregonians largely will miss out, it appears.

John Bumgardner, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, said sky watchers could try to drive out to eastern Oregon, which tends to have clearer skies, but even there, chances would be slim.

“It looks like the kind of rain that would blanket the whole state,” he said. “If by some miracle the system were to speed up a lot, then maybe, but I would say the chances are pretty bad for seeing the eclipse.”

Those of us who miss out on this week’s lunar eclipse will have two more opportunities in 2022, with total lunar eclipses forecast for May 16 and Nov. 8. You can check what time is best to watch tonight’s eclipse in your town on timeanddate.com.

Only a small sliver of the moon will be visible during the eclipse. About 97% of the moon will disappear into Earth’s shadow as the sun and moon pass opposite sides of the planet, EarthSky reported. The eclipse will be visible in many parts of the world, including North America, eastern Australia, New Zealand and Japan, according to EarthSky. For those on the East Coast, here is a chart from Accuweather.
