How Much Watching Time Do You Have This Weekend? - The New York Times

A new series starring Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell debuts this weekend, as does a new reality competition show judged by Martha Stewart.

‘The Shrink Next Door’
When to watch: Arrives Friday, on Apple TV+.

Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell star as a warped therapist and the patient whose life he manipulates in this eight-episode adaptation of the popular podcast. “Shrink” ticks a lot of trendy-TV boxes: It’s based on a true story; it’s a tale of coercion and charismatic psychological abuse; it begins with a confusing catastrophe and then flashes back 30 years; its episodes vary in length quite a bit; and it has famous people doing schlub drag. It even has Kathryn Hahn. As fun as it is to see Rudd and Ferrell onscreen together, the show can feel strangely hollow, and while the most wild part of the story is its veracity, this rarely feels authentic.

HBO

‘Succession’
When to watch: Sunday at 9 p.m., on HBO.

This week’s “Succession” is the fifth of the season’s nine episodes, though in a lot of ways it still feels like a prelude. Every time Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Logan (Brian Cox) are on the brink of their big showdown, they don’t quite get there, and so instead the pressure intensifies week by week. Despite the constant jockeying and negotiating — or maybe because of the constant jockeying and negotiating — the Roy siblings are all trapped in a disoriented stasis, like when you suddenly feel as if the train you’re on is going backward, when really the train next to you is just moving forward.

HGTV

‘Table Wars’
When to watch: Sunday at 8 p.m., on HGTV.

In a Season 3 episode of “Bob’s Burgers,” the quirky son, Gene, enters a local competition for creating fancy table settings. A mere eight years later, tablescaping has finally earned its own reality-contest show, with Martha Stewart as the head judge and everything. “Table Wars” loses some points with me by referring to its contestants as “table warriors,” but otherwise this is a fun, lightweight show where the most intense drama hinges on which direction a knife is supposed to face. If you like “Making It” or “Design Star,” or if you like the thrilling ice bath of Stewart’s mild disappointment, watch this.
