Daylight saving time ends this weekend. That means clocks will roll back one hour for the biannual time change in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and across most of the U.S.
The return to standard time will shift a bit of dwindling sunshine to the morning. The Lehigh Valley will observe sunrise at 7:38 a.m. on Saturday, then 6:39 a.m. on Sunday.
But sunset also shifts from about 6 p.m. on Saturday to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Evenings will be increasingly darker as we head toward the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year on Dec. 21.
Daylight saving time — often incorrectly referred to as daylight savings time; note the s — is observed in the U.S. from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and is in effect longer than so-called standard time.
Contrary to popular belief, the time change has nothing to do with farmers. Germany was the first county to establish a daylight saving time law in 1916 to conserve resources during World War I. Other countries followed suit.
The first U.S. law on daylight saving time took effect in 1918 but it was not standardized until 1966. Congress last expanded it by four weeks in 2005.
There is a growing movement to do away with the clock change in the U.S., but division on which way to go. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives in April passed a bill by Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Lehigh County) urging the federal government to make daylight saving time permanent. Meanwhile, rival bills in the state House and Senate, including one from Lehigh Valley Democrat Sen. Lisa Boscola, seek to make standard time the … well, standard.
