Volleyball Goes The Distance Again, This Time Against Biola - WOU Athletics

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Back-to-back matches went all five sets for the Western Oregon University volleyball team at the CWU/SPU Crossover. Last night, the Wolves went five sets against Hawaii Pacific and then turned around today and went five against Biola. WOU fought back to force the decisive set before the Eagles took the 3-2 victory (25-19, 22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-6).

Bailee Hartsook tallied a new season-high 19 kills in her first season with the Wolves to pace the offense. Isabel Hurliman made it three straight matches reaching double-digits in kills as she added 12 kills. It was another double-double going for a team-high 21 digs. Aubrey Stanton setup the offense with 35 assists. In addition to the big numbers put up by Hurliman, Sophie Matlock recorded 18 digs and Makenzie York posted 5.5 blocks, with two solo.

WOU (2-5) opened the first set moving out to a 7-3 lead behind points from Lauren Smith and Hartsook. The Wolves kept the lead at four at 11-7 following a pair of attack errors, including a double-block from York and Stanton. Hurliman kept WOU in front on a kill at 15-14 before Biola (4-3) reeled off the next three points for a 17-15 lead. Biola would come back to even the set and then the teams traded ties at 18 on a block by York and then at 19 on a kill by Hartsook before The Eagles capped the set on a 6-0 run for the 25-19 opening set win.

WOU wasted little time coming back from the rough ending to the first set going in front 10-2 in the second frame. WOU claimed the first four points and after Biola recorded two points, the Wolves went on another 6-0 run. During the second run Hartsook, Hurliman, Emily Olson, York and Smith all contributed points. A Stanton kill kept the lead at eight at 20-12 before Biola made one final push. The Eagles scored eight of the next 11 points to pull back to within three at 23-20. A service error moved WOU to set point and following two points by Biola, a double-block from York and Smith gave WOU the second set at 25-22.

It was a much closer start to the third set with WOU moving ahead at 10-8. Biola came back to score the next four points and after the teams tied at 12 and 13, Biola reeled off the next five points for a 18-13 advantage. After a kill by Hartsook had WOU within four, that would be as close as they would get the remainder of the set with Biola closing on a 7-3 run for the 25-17 third set win.

WOU came out with authority to start the fourth set, scoring five of the first six points to force Biola to call timeout. WOU had the lead out to 9-2 after a few blocks by York, with one being a combo block with Sarah Crowell. The Wolves kept control throughout the set, with Biola making a late push. The Eagles got it back to 22-19, but York and Hurliman combined for a block and later a kill by Hurliman pushed WOU to a 25-20 fourth set win to move the match to a decisive fifth.

Biola came out on fire in the fifth as they scored the first five points. Hurliman snapped the run with a kill. Biola kept coming, moving ahead 8-2. The Wolves tried to get back into it with points from Hartsook and Crowell, but the Eagles were not to be denied. They took 15 of the 21 points in the set for the 15-6 fifth set win and 3-2 match victory.

Biola recorded 73 kills to 29 errors in 185 chances (.238), while WOU countered with 46 kills to 22 errors in 165 chances (.145). The Eagles held a 66-41 edge in assists and 93-80 advantage in digs. WOU held a solid 12-5 edge in blocks and 5-3 advantage in service aces.

Dominique Kirton led Biola with 22 kills and made it a double-double with 13 digs. Abby Brewster tallied 28 assists. On defense, Sami Hover collected 35 digs and Abigail posted 1.5 blocks.

WOU will now return home to open the GNAC portion of the schedule this Thursday against Alaska starting at 7 p.m. They will close the week on Saturday afternoon facing Alaska Anchorage at 1 p.m.
