Michigan football hits season-ticket sales low under Jim Harbaugh - MLive.com

Two years after setting a school record during the Jim Harbaugh era, season ticket sales have swung the other way.

As of this week, the University of Michigan had sold 84,629 season tickets for its seven-game home schedule, associate athletic director and team spokesman Dave Ablauf told MLive.

That figure includes 66,134 regular, full-priced season tickets and 18,495 student season tickets, the lowest combined total since Jim Harbaugh arrived in Ann Arbor prior to the 2015 season.

It’s the lowest mark for season-ticket sales since the end of Brady Hoke’s tenure, when Michigan failed to hit the 80,000 mark in 2014. The previous low under Harbaugh came in 2018, when Michigan reported selling 87,843 season tickets to the NCAA. They have topped the 90,000-mark twice.

Michigan began processing season-ticket renewals in April at a cost of $527 per ticket, the same price they planned on charging in 2020 when fans were not allowed into Big Ten stadiums because of a conference-wide policy protecting against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Those interested in obtaining season tickets were required to contribute at least $150 as part of a standard seat licensing fee.

While the number is low compared to recent standards, it remains strong and would trigger an automatic sellout in all but 14 college football stadiums across the country. But last year’s disastrous season on the field and the uncertainty surrounding the virus this fall has folks hesitant about returning on a regular basis. Interestingly enough, the student season-ticket total (18,495) still tops the number sold in 2015, 2016 and 2018.

Typically, a season with Ohio State and marquee non-conference game (Washington) on the home schedule garners lots of interest. Michigan’s had to combat selling tickets for seasons in which they have both Ohio State and Michigan State on the home schedule every other year. That has been split up by a reset of the Big Ten schedule this year.

At things stand currently, only the regular-season finale against Ohio State on Nov. 27 is sold out at the 107,601-seat Michigan Stadium, while availability remains low for Saturday’s opener against Western Michigan and the Sept. 11 game against Washington.
