Days are getting short: When does Daylight Saving Time end and clocks fall back? - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — It’s not difficult to notice that the sun is setting earlier these days in Northeast Ohio.

At the beginning of the month, the sunrise was at 6:53 a.m. and the sunset was 7:59 p.m. Today the sun rose at 7:13 a.m. and it will set at 7:25 p.m. We’ve been losing close to three minutes of light each day during the month.

But the big “fall back” is coming ... that’s when we’ll turn our clocks back an hour with the end of Daylight Saving Time.

The date this year: 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 7.

Most people will turn their clocks back an hour when they go to bed on that Saturday night. And after seeing the sun set at 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 6, it will be pretty much dark by 5:14 p.m. the next day.

Unfortunately the daylight will continue to trend down after the clocks fall back. The earliest sunsets will come in early December ... 4:56 p.m. from Dec. 5 to Dec. 11. However, the shortest amount of daylight is on Dec. 21 ... the official beginning of winter. Although the sun will set a bit later (5 p.m.), it’s late rise (7:49 a.m.) means there will be only nine hours, 10 minutes and 12 seconds of daylight.

And then the slow climb out of the dark days begins. By the end of December, the sun will stay up until 5:06 p.m. and we’ll enjoy a whopping nine hours, 13 minutes and 43 seconds of daylight.

On Jan. 31, the sun will remain up until 5:41 p.m. and we’ll just surpass 10 hours of daylight. At the end of February we’ll have gained more than an hour of daylight since December, with the sun setting at 6:16 p.m.

A few weeks later, Daylight Saving Time resumes ... at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2022. On that day the clocks move forward an hour and the sunset will jump to 7:31 p.m.

Daylight Saving Time was initiated as an energy-saving measure in World War I and World War II. It took its current seasonal form in the mid-1970s, following the 1973 oil embargo. Critics question whether the time change saves energy and say it disrupts people’s sleep schedules with harmful effects, citing research showing a corresponding drop in productivity and an increase in car crashes.

There is a push to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. In December 2020, the Ohio Legislature approved Senate Concurring Resolution 8, also known as “The Sunshine Protection Act,” backing a permanent adoption of Daylight Saving Time. The resolution was nonbinding, since permanently adopting Daylight Saving Time would require an act of Congress.

States can exempt themselves from Daylight Saving Time, as Hawaii and Arizona (except on Navajo tribal lands) have done, but federal law prohibits states from adhering to Daylight Savings Time the entire year.
